A World of Whimsy
Escaping with mermaids, fairies and whales"It makes your heart sing for a minute or two," says artist Theresa LaBrecque, and that is why she loves, and paints, whimsy. Her whales, mermaids and fairies allow her a brief escape to "somewhere else." And she hopes those who view her work find the same.
LaBrecque, a Northwood resident, began her whimsical work in clay and moved to canvas and oils in recent years. She lived for a time on Cape Cod and it was there, she says, that "the mermaids claimed me." Then the whales did, too.
She sculpted and painted them ("they came out of my fingertips"), and became an established artist there. Two children's books - "Tea Time for Mermaids" and "A Whale of a Good Time" - followed.
Now back in New Hampshire, LaBrecque has been "claimed" by fairies. She is converting her historic farm near Saddleback Mountain into a fairy destination - with ceramic fairy houses set about, fairy chairs made from tree stumps and a fairy gazebo. "It's something that's quite fun and memorable," she says. And expect a book about fairies soon.
"I naturally take life a little too seriously. As an artist, when I have whimsy on the canvas, I'm happier. Just looking at it can transport me."
You can see LaBrecque's work this month at the Children's Museum of New Hampshire in Dover.

A Whale of a Ride at 100 Market
The Gallery at 100 Market Street in Portsmouth, NH will be featuring a full room of LaBrecque Art originals.
Theresa's art will remain on display through October 15th. The lower floors of the building are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. - the majority of Theresa's paintings are on the 3rd floor which is open Monday - Friday 8 am - 6 pm.
“All the art in our exhibits is family appropriate, but some have greater appeal for the younger members. There’s no doubt Theresa’s work does just that,” says Michael Simchik, gallery patron. “What’s not to like about pirates, windmills and mermaids and giraffes riding the backs of whales?” - SeacoastNH.com

Local Artist Brings Whimsy To Northwood
Theresa LaBrecque is a sculptress and painter residing in Northwood, NH. She is the present owner of “ Cliffhead” home on Old Mountain Road. This historical house is one of the earliest homes built in the historical Saddleback Mountain district.
Theresa studied commercial art in Arizona, floral design in California, and worked as a floral designer for the MFA Boston. She established The Cape Cod Mermaid studio and gallery in Cape Cod Massachusetts in 1989, where she sculpted and painted whimsical mermaids and wrote and published two children’s books, “ Tea Time With Mermaids” and “ A Whale of a Good Time”. With her move to rural New Hampshire Theresa’s artistic inspiration has begun to reflect the flora and fauna of the area. Yet, in keeping with her love for whimsy, Theresa is now offering on or off site Fairy House Party entertainment.
One Hundred Market Street Gallery in Portsmouth is currently exhibiting 21 pieces of Theresa’s artwork. The exhibit continues until October 15. Puzzles created from Theresa’s paintings and her children’s books can be purchased at Piece Time Puzzles in Northwood.
For a look at Theresa’s work visit www.labrecqueart.com or stop by the Chesley Memorial Library to see her painting “ Library Whale” where every creature in the painting, including flamingos, an otter, and a mermaid are reading books. The whale himself is reading Moby Dick!
