As a child who always enjoyed the outdoors, growing up in New Hampshire's White Mountains suited Theresa LaBrecque just fine. She believes that is where her love of whimsy first took hold, among the ferns on the moss covered forest floors playing with tiny, baby toads.
As an adult, life lead her to Cape Cod where she lived for many years with her cherished bull terrier, Panda. It was there, amidst the sand dunes and rich sea-faring history that she established herself as an artist and she became known as The Cape Cod Mermaid.
Her love of mermaids and all things nautical provided the inspiration for her first hardcover book, Tea Time with Mermaids; a collection of paintings with sing-song poetry chronicling the social life of mermaids. Many of the guests at these grand tea parties are whimsical renditions of surprisingly polite animals.
Her second book, A Whale of a Good Time, features her interpretative whale works. With her characteristic attention to detail, Theresa covers the
backs of whales with tiny flowers, butterflies, birds, and sea creatures from tail to blow hole. The whales in this book play host to both serene gardens and fantastical happenings; from a dog circus with a mermaid ringmaster in “Doggie Daycare” to a shipwreck haunted by pirates in “Ghost Ship Whale.”
Now that Theresa has returned to her New Hampshire roots, she is transitioning her popular Whale of a Town series (recognizable buildings
and street scenes of local towns traveling the seas on the backs of friendly whales) to accommodate land-lovers. With as much 'sophisticated whimsy' as she can fit on a canvas, Theresa LaBreque's latest series, Moose Crossings, should be spotted near New Hampshire forests soon.
